I just saw myself on TV...
And dang, I have jumungous breasts!
Seriously, DM just called to tell me he saw me on Public access, talking about PotC when that old guy was at Madstone interviewing people. H didn't even see it, because he was in the other room and didn't come out when i started yelling to him. Oh well...I'm locally unfamous and he'll never know. Speaking of Madstone, the new spot with my tag on it started running today. AM listeners, if any, are going to be sick of my voice before you know it, i'm in like, 4 ads by now.
H and I did in fact cab it to the Q16 to see Dawn of the Dead. It was pretty good but not truly great.
It started off damn scary, which I already knew from watching TV. The zombies are fast...damn fast! I'd almost say they are too fast, but I am biased because I think all zombies shoule be like they are in my own zombie story (they start out fast and slow down as they rot away). I am okay with speedy zombies for the sake of a scary film, but they should not be outrunning cars or going faster than olympic sprinters. I dont' think the zombies had superhuman strength, but strength like guys on PCP have ("that zombie was on PCP, Johnson!") where they don't realize how much it will hurt to punch thru a windshield or wooden door.
The move has plenty of scares, and the characters don't make a lot of stupid mistakes. There are some wierd moral choices made by some of the characters. Like the Sarah Polley girl drives past a few panicky people without stopping to help, yet is the first one to want the men to help people once they get to the mall. There are too many people at the mall, so there are less people that you actually care about. i know aside from Sarah Polley, Ving, the lead white guy and the main security guy...the only other guy I cared about was Andy from across the street. And it sucked when he bit it--or rather, when it bit him! The little girl and dad thing was kind of sad, but I think it would have been more powerful had they been smarter and shot him before he changed. But the girl with dad closely echoed 28 Days Later, while the guy with the baby was a not very fleshed out subplot of the original Dawn. As long as you're doing a "reimagining", why not take the stuff that works and dump the stuff that doesn't? There are no back stories of any character save for the one we see, and Ving mentioning his brother at the rescue station. There would have been plenty of time while they were stuck in the mall. And there are no news bullitins that give any useful information, this may be true to what reality would be, but it leaves a gaping hole for fans of the genre.
I did not care of the shooting and editing style blatantly mimicking that of 28 Days Later during the outside battle scenes. A lot of the editing was too fast and made it difficult to see what was going on.
I did like the excellent cameos from Tom Savini and Ken Foree. I hear the other main guy from the original was in it too, but I didn't see him. The dog was a nice touch, but the baby idea was mine--again from the story I began in 1995 and never submitted for publication. And I did expect to see at least one suicide, denied!
If you do plan to see it, be sure to stay until the end of the credits...
In other Wednes News, i wieghed myself today and found that I had stayed the same as last week. That is both tragic and sad. So it seems that my days of loosly following the diet and still losing are over. Now I have to be on it for real and not cheat if I expect to be any healthier...and i do! So tomorrow will be grocery shopping, then back to the business of becoming an even lovelier Wednes than before. Again, I hope you's can handle it!
Principle shooting has begun for HP and the Goblet of Fire, but they havne't released any pics of the actors who've been cast as Cho, Krum or Little Barty Crouch. I look forward to Emma thompson as Sybil Trelawny, especially if she stays around long enough to get sacked!

Yeah, I missed Scott Reinigers cameo too...apparently he was a general in one of the broadcasts. I'll keep an eye out for him when I go and see it again.
I was dubious about the whole idea of fast zombies until I thought about it - everyone who gets bitten, reanimates within seconds, before much tissue damage would set in, so they would pretty much possess all of the physical faculties they had before they died.
I must say, I actually prefer the Dawn remake to 28 Days Later ( which never quite delivered on its promises as far as I was concerned ) and thought it made a far better fist of the end of the world.

I also appreciated the nods to Fulci's Zombie.

You should pick up a copy of the novel Wetwork by Phil Nutman ( might be Nuttman ) if you can find one...its a Romeroesque zombie novel with the ultimate bleak ending. That'd make a killer film. I wouldn't be surprised if someone is optioning it for the screen now ( seeing as the zombies are eating Jesus for lunch at the box office ;) )

And in other news...

Btw as an aside, having read about decomposition in humans, I can say that within 48 hours on warm days, it gets unpleasent very fast. The zombies outdoors would have begun to show...bloat.
