The Passion of the Christ
Okay, I just returned home from previewing this film. I'm in no fit state to write a real review, but I do have a few thoughts to share. They will not be particularly spoilery, but I'll se a cut anyway so as not to offend anyone.
First of all, let me tell you that after watching this film, I feel like a battered child. I went from tiny tears welling up, to tears streaming down my face, to openly sobbing loudly. At one point, I literally covered my face with my hands as I simply was too upset to watch what was being shown to me. Twice I actively contemplated walking out. I want to be clear that I am not some sissy who covers up thier eyes during the scary part...nor do I routinely walk out of theatrical films for any reason other than boredom.
This is a passionate, graphic, exceptionally brutal, stylized telling of the story of a man. What you see and hear on the screen will stay with you always, and if you are not moved by this film...I suspect that you may have no soul. And again for clarity, I do not subscribe to the Christian faith.
Gibson does not give you all the information you need to appreciate the story. Luckily, I have some Catecism (sp?) to fall back on. He seems to want people to follow up and do thier research, which I totally respect. From a film standpoint though, you will have unanswered questions, and it may irk you.
Also, for heavens sake do not take children to this film. I'm telling you, the violence is extreme, even if your kid has seen every rated R movie made in the last 30 years. I anticipate that a lot of people will be walking out due to the violence.
Usually, I would reccomend a film of this caliber without hesitation. This time I'll suggest that you ask around some more, and read plenty of reviews first.

with all the controversy that this film has already received, I hope it inspires more people to look to history and to look to other research to learn more...it is good that raises questions and that it doesn't provide all the answers...
I am glad that they decided to include subtitles though...I am just one of those people that needs to know as much of what people actually say as I can...even if I know the basic storyline and have it graphically portrayed to me, I think some of my understanding would be lost if everything were in a total foreign language with no translation...
I do not subscribe to the Christian faith either, but there is certainly something about the Jesus story that moves me and that I feel tremendous sadness for...I think it's awesome that it is being released on Ash Wednesday, and I hope to be able to see it that day...

I was glad to have the subtitles, I think I would have been annoyed without them, as i do not know the story as well as I used to. i don't really remember the politics involved and why certain people felt especially threatened by Jesus.

I would like to see Mystic River before it leaves the area, and Wednesday might be the only day I can do so...so maybe I'll postpone seeing a film about Jesus past Ash Wednesday...I probably won't decide this until the day comes...

No, I had not heard that.
I don't imagine god would have any big issues with this movie. But then, He and I have never been on the best of terms.

I don't know, I thought it was a very beautiful film, but that's basically it.

Re: Spoiler
I went to an early showing, with mostly elderly people in the crowd, and after it quite a few were in tears.
