Out and About with Wednes:

Went to the movies today to catch up on work related veiwing and just to get the hell out of the house for a little while. Good call on my part. I also wanted to do the rrecording at the theatre, in case anybody fromt he station wants a better sample of my voice.

First I saw The Cooler which someone told me was a comedy. Lies, all lies. William H Macy is awesome as a big loser who is so losery, his job is to stand around by winners in this casino until his loseriness rubs off on them, turning them into losers as well. Alec Baldwin plays the part you would expect Robert DeNiro to play. Maria Bello plays the chick like Sharon Stone, but less of a bitch. And Paul Sorvino plays a guy you would never expect. Joey Fat One of whatever boy band that was also appears as a smarmy lounge singer; it's actually pretty amusing.
This film was good. Thick plot with cool characters, plenty of tension and surprises. See it if you can.

Next, I saw 21 Grams to see what all the fuss was about with Sean Penn. Frankly, I thought he was better in Mystic River, although I suppose this character could be considered a tad more likeable. The film also starred Benicio Del Toro, and that blonde lead chick from The Ring. Melissa Leo from homicide was excellent as the wife who stands by her man. And Denis o'Hare (whom I love on his MANY fine appearances on Law & Order) is subtle and wonderful as Penn's doctor.
This movie is kind of a mind fucker, but I still reccomend it highly. It's a rough film to watch, with lots of self destructive behavior and people coping with terrible things. But with that in mind, there is some fabulous character work and some compelling drama. So see it if you haven't yet.

I left the theatre with [livejournal.com profile] slapnticklejr around 2am to see the whole world covered with a light layer of ice. Just enough to make everything super dangerous but look beautiful. It was nice.

Now I think I'll watch some TV, have a smoke and a snack, then off to bed.
Dang, I also have to finish laundry...off I go!

i was out on the "beautiful" ice about 30 minutes ago.... i fell on my butt twice on the way from my car to the house.

...my pride is bruised... at least i think it's my pride

I feel exactly the opposite about the Sean Penn performances. I actually thought the character in Mystic River was more likeable(despite the obvious unlikeable things that he does) or at least you relate more with him than the character in 21 Grams, but I just overall felt that the performances in 21 Grams were 100% natural. I completely forgot that these were famous actors and that they were acting whereas in Mystic River, everyone was ACTING. It was just a bit melodramatic. Both were amazing performances, they were just different kinds. I just prefer and admire the type of acting in 21 Grams more.

I can see your point.

I just think his character in 21 Grams was less communicative and forthcoming (both with his wife and with the other woman) when his character clearly had the capacity to say things earlier on. Whereas in MR, his character goes thru some heavy shit and never really discusses his feelings; yet this seems natural for the kind of person he is portraying.

I also thought 21G had some great scenes...like the magic time scenes with the birds and soforth. That was way cool.

I do agree that 21G had more subdued performaces. MR seemed to be a bit pushy with the emotionality of it all.

Thanks for the movie recommendations... both of them I really want to see (I'm a suck for character actors like William H. Macy, Sean Penn, and Benecio del Torro).
