"Boxing Day" has nothing to do with those sexy shorts!

Well, I'm home from work yet again. And back from walking that dog that lives here. Lucky for me, it was not very cold out today.

In case you don't know, I am an avid reader of urban legends. I think they are damn interesting, and I admit being taken in by many of them as a kid. I guess I've always found it more fun to believe in fantastic things than to wait around for boring old "proof". As such, I find myself over at www.snopes.com fairly often. When I saw this, I just knew I'd have to share it with the all of you:

http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/cross.asp

As for me, I bought my Hot Hot Boss a cool, cool gift from Hot Topic. He is getting a T-shirt from the 10th anniversary of Nightmare Before Christmas. He is also getting a yummy box of Jelly Bellies, because they are sweet and tasty in a gourmet kind of way.
Plus it will foil all of conventional math and science when my Hot boss puts on a Cool t-shirt and the results are even more HOT. I might even win some kind of science prize for that...
I'll tell you who won't win a prize though, whomever did the questions for this quiz; they are a very bad speller, but its a pretty neat quiz:

you are a dark and evil Dragon
You are a dark and evil Dragon!

What type of Magic Creature are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

I think that means tht Ralph (rafe) Feinnes (fines) has a tattoo of me on his back. I bet I'm smiling.

yup...

I think I know the origin of that Urban Legend...

Strangely enough, I have the vague inkling that I know the origin of the "Crucified Santa" image.

Circa 1960, my sister and her husband-to-be were in college and knew a guy with a weird and wicked sense of humor, and they later told me (in the early 70's) that one of his greatest pranks was the creation and printing of Easter greeting cards, with a cute crucified-Easter-Bunny image. It was drawn JUST cute enough that people actually didn't get it, at first...it kind of snuck up on you later. Fast-forward to the late 70's, that same idea was used for a cover of Hustler magazine, and I recall asking them if this was the work of their friend (they doubted it, but thought it was possible that one of the Hustler staff might have known the guy in the 60's.)

In any case, if you read the Snopes piece, the Santa display legend starts circulating around 1990, which means people possibly had this very dim memory of the Hustler cover, but couldn't quite place it. (It really was an unusual cover, for that magazine.) When you have these partial memories, you start to build likely circumstances around them, and the idea of clueless Japanese paople is one of those wish-fulfillment things that would have been pleasing to people at the time.

Ha. that is very true.

Didn't Hustler go thru some weird religious phase, then some wierd anti-religion phase? I think I only know that because of that movie with Ed norton and Woody Harrelson...

A freind of mine used to have a small statue of Santa Clause kneeling in prayer. Eeesh!

My very dim memory of the history of Hustler is that the Easter cover pre-dated Flynt's pro-religion phase (which I think was early-80's). I couldn't keep track of Flynt; I liked his editorial attitude and some of the articles, but the actual pictorial and humor content just didn't do enough for me that I was willing to pay money for it.

My fondest recollection of the magazine (mid-late-70's) is that I had a high school friend who wasn't much of a reader, and I recommended that if he REALLY wanted to learn to like reading, he should buy a magazine that really appealed to him. So he bought Hustler, and read it all the way through every month, then he'd bring it over and we'd discuss the articles. This was a success...he went on to read other things, and I managed to develop some respect for what I had thought was pretty low-brow journalism.

That is a great story. I was never a big fan of Hustler myself. My mom gave my my sex talk by showing me pics in a playboy, it was pretty traumatizing (plus I'm still waiting to look like those chicks, per my moms version of events).

Although I used to get penthouse forum for use at my old phone sex gig. Those things are pretty damn funny...

Playboy!? Awk! I wouldn't want to learn much with visuals from THAT source...
1) everybody looks like Barbie and Ken dolls
2) penetration never occurs
...to their credit, I'm sure the Playboy staff never intended the magazine as a tutorial.

By contrast, Hustler at least was a little closer to reality, and the people in the pictorials looked like real people you might actually meet. Not to say you'd necessarily WANT to meet them...

Ah well, there's a lot of us who'd prefer not to be in the company of Playboy women, so perhaps you're not missing too much.

I can imagine Penthouse Forum being a source for phone sex topics. (my mind wanders to an odd movie called BOX OF MOON LIGHT, in which there's a gal who writes her own quirky phone sex scripts.) Was this someting between friends or a business enterprise? Not to be uncomfortably nosy, just an interesting topic.

Actually, I've talked about my phonsex career at my community [livejournal.com profile] erotillectuals fairly often. I did that kind of work full time for awhile, it pays pretty well for a job you can do at home, in pajamas with a joint in hand...

These days i only deal with a select few clients. It's much nicer for me that way.

I'll have to give the community a look-through! I like the name, but rarely have any interesting stories of my own to share (I'm not very adventurous, it seems).

>it pays pretty well for a job you can do at home, in pajamas with a joint in hand...<

Anything that pays AT ALL that can be done at home in pajamas sounds like a good idea. I've had a few female friends with vocal qualities I've thought would be perfect for that job, but I don't think any of them were enterprising enough to attempt to make any money.

>These days i only deal with a select few clients. It's much nicer for me that way.<

Sounds comfortable...was it disconcerting in some way to deal with unfamiliar customers? Or perhaps I should just seek out your posts on the [livejournal.com profile] erotillectuals...

I have never enjoyed doing domination or humiliation calls. Some guys are just wierd...it can sort of put you off sex.

But overall it is a kind of funny and fun gig. I learned a lot about men's odd little minds. Sometimes the hardest part is not to burst out laughing at the thigns these men say; since they tell me stuff they think is too dirty to tell a wife or girlfriend.

Men's odd little minds

[identity profile] paulcurtis.livejournal.com 2003-12-27 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Groan! I am SO boring! I only have two fetishes: black clothing and glasses...and I never insist on either one. I don't even have much that I'd care to hide from anybody. Oh, and it's been commented I seem to like women who are somewhat plump...but it's probably just that I get afraid skinny gals are sick or starving themselves.

But I guess there are people who spend their lives waiting for a chance to unburden themselves in one way or another.

As for the Dom/Sub stuff, I never got the hang of it myself...just isn't part of my makeup, apparently. I had a former girlfriend who wanted me to try it and it didn't go well at all. But she made sure to take the hand cuffs with her when she left me for another guy. I presume he seemed more promising...

Yeesh!

Yeah, I've thought about writing a novella about some of the crazy men and thier freaky stories. Many phonsex companies make you sign cionfidentiality agreements though.

I imagine that even with a confidentiality clause, people would actually sue becaue they'd have to admit that the "pervert" in the story is them.

hahahahaha!

Hmmm...surely there would be a way to change just enough details (to avoid embarassing anyone) but to have the same humorous/surrealistic/pathetic impact.

The challenge would be to create an actual story out of it, so the plot wasn't just a series of vignettes. Perhaps something in which it turns out the different callers are actually the same guy and he doesn't remember making the previous calls? Nah, that makes the essentially harmless caller out to be some sort of psycho. Sex activities for money have a bad enough reputation ANYWAY, no sense making up yet another psycho story out it.

Perhaps a story in which the callers are all men and women who have been subjected to some sort of mind-control experiment (as in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) and for some reason they are drawn to this particular phone number. And the person TAKING the calls eventually finds certain threads repeated over and over in different combinations and figures out the key that unravels the Master Plan... That way the callers are actually instrumental in solving the problem, not creating one.

By the way, I'm skimming through the [livejournal.com profile] erotillectuals community and haven't turned up any of these anecdotes yet (mind you, it's not exactly a frantic search...) are these RECENT posts?

I havent' made phonsex posts recently, but got into a discussion with [livejournal.com profile] secretlives, a fellow phonesex gal a few weeks ago.

I have been working on various stories delaing with phone work. I also worked for that psychic line with the Miss Cleo commercials (until the company was sued). I am not sure what kind of characters I want, so I'm not sure which stories will have the most impact. I find that movies on the subject are not well researched...Girl 6 was terrible.

Miss Cleo...

SHRIEK! One of my sisters told me a few years ago that she was one of the "Psychic Friends" phone people. I told her I thought it seemed like a good position for her talents. Some months later, I was talking with her on the phone and asked if she was still with that company. "Oh, they moved their base of operations and I'm not sure of their current phone number" she told me. I quoted her to one of my roommates, who said, "Maybe that's their way of testing to see if she's really psychic."

As for finding what kind of characters you want...ah, that's where much of the fun of writing comes from.
My only recommendation is to create at least one or two characters the reader can really LIKE. It's not very difficult, and it's a great way to entice people to read your next work. Many, MANY writers either disregard or disagree with this advice, but in my experience they work against their writing careers that way.

Actually, the miss cleo company doesn't care if you're psychic or not as long as you can hold people on the phone.

Re: Miss Cleo...

[identity profile] paulcurtis.livejournal.com 2003-12-27 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know! Same goes for the Psychic Friends, without any doubt. My roommate and I were using our amusing sideways logic to account for how my sister had managed to lose yet another job.

Actually, I have to admit I'm still a little surprised she wasn't more successful; in person she exhibits a compelling, yet sensitive and nurturing personality. Whatever she says, you will probably believe it immediately. Unfortunately, this trait is virtually useless in the absence of some sort of certification, and while she has a college degree, she has no further, specialized qualification to specialize in. As a phone psychic, I figured she would be in the perfect position to make best use of her strengths. No idea what went wrong...maybe she talked when she should have listened.

I'm over at snopes quite often too. Urban myths are such great source of amusement. :-)
