Cats V Dogs 2: more thinkin'

Since so many people have asked me to, I'm sharing a few more thoughts on the whole cat v dog debate.

I notice that my roomate sleeps with his dog in the bed. I presume he can do that comfortably, and that the dog will sleep thru the night. If I try to let my cats sleep in the room with me, they will wake me up to pet them over and over, then go to the door and meow loudly until I let them out.

Cats shed a bit...dogs cover your whole world with hair.

My cats are very particular about thier appearance. The only thing they have more often than a nap is a bath. But they love to shred things, throw things around, knock them over and just generally mess up the house. Dogs dont' seem to mind dirt, although they will shake off water all over the carpet. But they do seem very concerned about where thier stuff is at all times.

Dogs chase things and give them back to you. Cats chase things and eat or hide them.

I said earlier that dogs think thier owner is family, while cats think their owner is part of the staff. Cats are most concerned with what you are doing for them. Mine come up with all manner of interesting maneuvers to get me to pet them even when I'm asleep. I must say though, unless they are jumping on my chest, my favorite way to be woken up is by my cats.

When my roomate goes to work, the dog acts sad and whiny. When he comes home the dog acts incredibly, disproportionately happy to see him. When I get home, my cats meow at me until I pet them; then they walk me to thier food bowl in case I forgot where it is.

While I beleive my cats love me, this may be mere projection on my part. They are aware though, that it is I, and I alone who gives them food/water and changes thier litter. My roomate however, is loved by that silly dog.

We can most certainly take my mom's dog for a walk, though with that pooch, it is more like a "drag" instead of a "walk". She walks us.

Still, it is much simpler to walk a dog that a cat. We once bought leashes and harnesses for our cats. Once out side they would immediately go to one place - under the nearest car. We would then have to drag kitty out, and try to continue on. The cats, however, would not appreciate us forcing them from a new hiding place and would run under the next car, or up a tree (when they had claws). Up a tree was always fun, because then we were the fools holding the leash at the bottom, pulling in vain at a cat who was holding on at the top for dear life. When we finally got them down, they were no longer interested in walking and would lie down. So we would be there, dragging along a cat who was busily lounging on it's side, cleaning it's head.

Yikes!

Yeah, I've never understood the appeal of walking ones cat. I don't know any cats personally that would be interested.

"Dogs chase things and give them back to you. Cats chase things and eat or hide them."

To think I've been having sex with a DOG all this time! Blech! Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Not at all, Lad.

Bebo truly loves my wife. When Dana cries Bebo stands on her lap, looks into her face and touches her cheek or shoulder with a paw. I swear to God. This shit has happened. Granted it takes alot to make Dana cry. Usually she just bitches at ME.

That's really sweet... The only comparable thing mine - *one* of mine - ever does is cry and pace back and forth in distress when I'm sitting in the bathtub. He also did this when I was badly hungover and vomiting pretty hard.

I don't think most cats respond to the same emotional signals that dogs do.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2003-09-19 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, my cats have done that as well. But they do the same thing when they want attention or are hungry.

It's still awful sweet.

Cats can fetch! I lived with a cat that would fetch toys and little paper balls, and I've lived with three that like to bring me things. Usually dead things with limbs ripped off, but things nonetheless.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2003-09-19 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That must be quite something. I can get my cats to chase things, but never to bring them back.

I wonder what makes them do that.

who feeds you ? huh, who? thats right, i do, so you have to love me.
your cats do love you, i know mine loves me. SHE LOVES ME LISA.

i heard, now this was only through a few friends and internet sites so it may be wrong, that Cats vs dogs 3 was already in post production and has a street date of today or tomorrow, is this true!!!!!????

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2003-09-20 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I don't know.

Probably some time next week...
...if I get some new insights by then.

Sheri-berry quite contrary

[identity profile] tallulahmae.livejournal.com 2003-09-20 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Self-referential statement: Neither one of my dogs shed. It's awesome. I also used to have a cat who would throw his body at the front door, roll over onto his back, and meow loudly when he would hear me pick up my keys to leave. Some things you've observed today may be particular to you and your cats and the shedding Nolan.

Oh certainly. When I was a kid we had a spaniel poodle mix which did not shed.

It would be awesome to have a non-shedding dog. But Nolan is so well behaved I can't really complain.

Nolan is very sweet.

That was one of the reasons I was against owning Nolan in the beginning. The Shedding. I'e grown up with animals, and Nolan shed as bad the worst of them, but she is soooo wonderful, that I can live with it. It's kind of like parents who don't notice that their kids are screaming in public. They are used to it, so they don't hear it. I don't like all the hair she loses, but I am used to it.

Every dog I've owned, except for the two I have now, shed like crazy. My cats used to deposit piles of hair where ever they were. But, I still loved them. :)

here's a couple of things about cats and dogs.

Dog: "You feed me, keep me sheltered, play with me when I'm lonely, and provide me with a sense of security. You must be a god!!!!"

Cat: "You feed me, keep me sheltered, play with me when I'm lonely, and provide me with a sense of security. I must be a god!!!!"

There was more but K distracted me and I forgot.
