Perhaps they're illiterate, dyslexic, or something similar, but embarassed to admit it to people.

Of course, this doesn't give them the right to be rude to anyone doing their job, which it sounds like they possibly were.

See, if I walked into the wrong theatre on accident, I'd be embarassed at my own stupidity. I would not loudly claim it was the fault of the usher. I would assert that an usher is reasonable to assume that adults can discern a "1" from a "2".
