The Newsroom
I'm gonna talk a little about this seasons The Newsroom so far
Firstly, Fuck Jerry Dantana. Fuck him right in the ear.
But I don't want to get ahead of myself.
The first few eps this season were very hard to watch. Maggie is not a bad person. She's not mean, she doesn't lie out of malice, spite, greed, or even a real desire to obfuscate. She thought she was in love with Don. She wasn't. Deep down, she was looking for more because--guess what? Don wasn't actually in love with her. H just thought he should be because Maggie was cute and nice and liked him.
Don didn't handle that especially well, but not because Don is a bad guy. He's unwise in the ways of relationships. He's also clearly in love with Sloan.
It's so incredibly sad that Maggie loses her best friend, and fucking infuriating how much spiteful blame Lisa heaped onto Maggie. Sure, I can see how she'd be pissed--but to conflate Maggie's confusion into "you parked him with me" is indicative of a giant chip on her shoulder that has nothing to do with Maggie's actions. I know people like this in RL, and they are a pain in the fucking ass.
The scene where Sloan confronts her ex?
I can't even express how beautiful that was. For the first time ever, I'm glad Olivia Munn left The Daily Show.
Even worse for Maggie is that she went to Africa as a way to (fuck you JP if you're reading this) feel empowered. She ended up feeling overtly responsible for the death of an adorable child who also liked her a lot. Tragic is what that is. Then for her to come back and be second-guessed by everyone? Ick. No wonder she's drinking her face off.
It sucks to be Jim. He loves Maggie but won't pursue her now that she's available. His pride is fairly understated, but it's there. (Failing at the Romney campaign is nothing shameful. I'm actually horrified that so many journalists were happy to sit back and play run the press release instead of being fucking reporters. But since we have hindsight, we know that American news is pretty much just running the press releases, and tweets from people who know nothing about the story in question.) That chick Jim's with now is a bimbo and it won't last.
Jerry Dantana wasn't fired because of Genoa. He was fired because what he did was dishonest, unethical, and compromised the reputation of the station. This would have been true regardless of whether or not the story aired.
Fuck him and his lawyers and his lack of an apology. Fuck him sideways!
Leona Lansing? Lady, I don't say this about too many people, but I love you when you've been drinking. If I were Daniel Craig, I'd have hugged you.
I love The Newsroom. It harkens us back to a simpler time with independent sources and verified facts. A time when people actually gave a shit about the difference between news and entertainment. It reminds me of when I got out of college with my journalism degree ready to tear Detroit a new one--and then our newspapers went on a strike that lasted more than three years.
