I'd say there's absolutely nothing self-absorbed about being aghast at someone not knowing who J.D. Salinger is. He wrote what is arguably the most well-known novel of the 20th Century. Not even recognizing the name isn't really an "I guess I'm not up on my popular culture" thing, it's more of an "I must have willfully ignored the bulk of my high school English classes" thing.
