Why I like to stay up all night.

When Ben went to The Temple to be judged for Alex's death, the Smoke Monster let him live. Ben took that as a sign that he was forgiven, and after the ensuing conversation with "Alex," he seemed to believe he was done suffering for it.

However...

We learned last week that the Smoke Monster is Jacob's enemy. So it really let Ben live because he intended to trick him into killing Jacob. Most upsetting. Poor Ben. All he really seems to want is to have some control over his own life. Based on what we've seen so far, he hasn't had any. I know a lot of fans dislike/distrust Ben and think he's evil. The way LOST has given us information is intentionally misleading. Yeah, Ben is pretty out of line in say, his treatment of Juliet. But really, nobody but Annie has ever genuinely loved him for him. Where the hell was he supposed to learn anything but deceit, lies, and manipulation? And will we ever find out what became of Annie? I thought not, but when Zack and Emma showed up last week, I realized that any goddamn thing in the world might happen. *cue Rose and Bernard*

That said, I am really not cool with him killing John Locke.

With regard to Smokey, I have to wonder if he's simply amassing people capable of, or having demonstrated, their ability/willingness to murder someone. You know, because he needed someone to kill Jacob. Maybe it's him that makes people sick. It could be that Jacob's enemy has been manipulating this all along. Or maybe both he and Jacob are doing it. It does seem clear that Jacob gave Hurley the guitar case, but who the hell knows since you need to speak several languages to really understand LOST--and I don't. I dunno though, even with the flashbacks, Jacob seems a bit too lassez faire for the sort of proactivity required for that level of manipulation. Unless of course, he's some kind of celestial being.

I've also been thinking about how so many locations on The Island are characters unto themselves. They even have arcs. Think about the way we were introduced to The Hatch/Swan. Now compare that to what you think of it now, and remembering briefly how it blew the hell up--allowing Desmond to see the future. What was up with that, anyway? Hope they tell us. The Island as a whole is a character, and the many stations and locations are minor characters, popping up occasionally to do some pivotal thing. The Orchid, The Pearl (Ah, Carlo and whatsername...), The Beach v The Caves, New Otherton, The Black Rock.

And how about Richard getting completely bitch-slapped? Me no likee. I did say during the first season (and you can check my archive under the LOST tag) that John Locke was a bad man. Okay, I was not right about that, but it was probably fueled by my wish to see him play an evil crazyman. I even watched Stepfather 2 this month--and that ridiculous farce is plotted on the assumption that the average person has never heard the song Camptown Races. Plus, it's totally a rip-off of the plot of Fritz Lang's M, which is a totally badass 30's movie that I do not yet own on DVD. Anyway, I cannot get over how amazing Terry O'Quinn is, and how much he's developed as an actor since I first started watching him in horror sleepers. And he's not even my favorite thing about the show. I heart Michael Emerson, and could watch him all day. I even listened to that dreadful James Patterson book just to hear him read it--while I wondered why he was pronouncing the H so much. ;-]

I was gonna go to bed an hour ago, but H will be home pretty soon. Then again, I took a sleeping pill so I might not make it until then. Later today my friend Sara is coming over to watch Salem's Lot. I'm so excited that someone wants to watch it with me. I also have to talk to H and figure out if we can afford to see The Wolfman. It better rock!

Yay! Is she a SL virgin? It is our duty to convert as many people as we can to become a worshiper at the altar of SL!

I'm hoping The Wolfman turns out to be good. I'm excited that Anthony Hopkins is in it.

She saw SL years ago. Since then she has become very into vampire lore in general (NOT because of Twilight) and wants to watch it again in that context. I warned her that these are not sexy vampires like she might be used to.

Isn't Edward a vegetarian vampire, or some shit like that? I don't see the point with certain depictions of vampires since the authors behind them seem intent on leaching them of any horror whatsoever. When I started reading Interview with the Vampire, I was immediately put off by, "Oh, no. I quite love crucifixes!" Yuck!

I'm totally cool with challenging traditional vampire conventions if there's a reason for it. If I am not mistaken, someone in T-lite is a "psi" vampire--which is different from what they now call a "sanguinary" vampire. I am told that psi vampires suck out your life force or some shit. Even if one can accept that, vampires walking around during the day is just shenanegans.

That said, I am okay with the first 2 Anne Rice vamp books, even though they are a bit too close to romance novels for me.
