Really? In Louisianna? I'm shocked. SHOCKED I say!

Okay, I'm not at all shocked, but I am disgusted and horrified.
Plus, it's a fitting topic of discussion. H and my anniversary is this coming Monday.
We've already been married for 2 years if you can believe that. We've actually been together for over 10 years, as we became exclusive in June of 1999.

Louisianna JOP denies interracial couple a marriage license "out of concern for any children they might have." Well, what a thoughtful and considerate individual.

Here's a fun quote from the Community "Leader."

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Goodness! Your bathroom? You actually let those people into the very room where you take a shit? How could I ever have thought you were a racist when you're obviously progressive enough to let "piles and piles" of people with different pigmentation than you urinate in YOUR bathroom? Dr King would be so happy to know that--okay, I'm not going to continue that line of thought, but you know what I'm getting at.

I'm so sick and fucking tired of people behaving as if they have some moral imperative to impose their bullshit on other people. Race? Really? Discrimination on the basis of pigmentation is SO totally 30 years ago. Get over it already. If you have a moral objection to two people getting married, by all means don't perform the ceremony. But denying them the right to a legal contract is just--you know what? Just stop it. You're being an ass and you need to shut up. It's basically the same thing I say to pharmacists who want to be pharmacists only as long as they can deny certain people certain pills for certain personal reasons.

These people, I say, can go fuck themselves.
The rest of you, have a pleasant Friday.
And remember to do something cool for your boss if s/he is not a complete prick.
It's boss's day!

just when you think we're making forward steps.

in the meantime, visiting my family in indiana - holy racism! they were bashing obama (and not even for valid reasons) and at one point my uncle started sporting his confederate flag doo rag.

oO

i also say people can go fuck themselves!!

*sigh*

Boy, good thing he was able to pull that one out of the fire by making that 'explanation'!

Alas for the '... but not if they're a prick.' Ah, well.

I'm going to become a Justice of the Peace so I can refuse to marry heterosexual couples -- I just don't believe in "mixing the genders that way." (/sarcasm)

Let us all point and laugh. (One of these days I'm actually going to tell a difficult customer they're only opening themselves to the international disgust of my Friends-list.)

I heard about this on Democracy Now! this afternoon. I loved the "I'm not a racist" bit. Why are we even having this discussion in 2009? Ridiculous.

It seems that whenever somebody starts a statement with "I'm not a racist..." it usually means they are. My Gran does the same thing with the bathroom. She's so proud of herself that she lets the black man who cuts her lawn use the bathroom in her home, but makes sure to tell me that she IMMEDIATELY went in and Cloroxed the whole place. Ugh.

And this makes me think of something a (white) prof at OC said once, about if she had to do it over again, she would have had a bi-racial child because she thought it would benefit the child to "dilute the white" out of them.

AND I love the Bloodhound Gang :)

It's a given that "I'm not a racist, but..." is going to precede something totally douchey and racist. You'd think people would clue in to that by now.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch out man, people get fired now for blogging about customers that suck.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yes. His "rationale" for such a thing would be hilarious if he wasn't depriving real people of real rights. He has the nerve to say that mixed race marriages don't tend to last very long. Gee, nothing racist about pulling statistics out of your ass to support your bullshit racist theories.

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
shhhh... don't tell anybody, but one of my nearest and dearest friends is one of those guys (in fact, you're married to him). If my neighbors find out, there goes the neighborhood. Hey, you should move to our neighborhood. Have I mentioned that before?

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't understand why we're still even discussing race in contemporary society.

My brain is spinning to guess who that prof might be. Dr walther is the only prof I knew of who made overtly racist comments.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, in fact. You have.

However, we've no wish to travel to a place where we'll be hated by idiots for arbitrary reasons, fun as that sounds. ;-]

*nods* None of his rationale makes any sense or is based on anything other than his fucked-up view of the world.

I can't remember her name for sure, but I think we called her Dorie? She was in the English dept? I think she was trying to be progressive and non-racist, but it all came out wrong.

I'm wondering if the judge is refusing to marry any couples of mixed ethnicity, or if his idiocy is reserved for black/white couples. What if a Hispanic person wanted to marry a Japanese person? Do you think he'd say no?
