A couple of smart ass comments borne of anger:

So...waterboarding is legal, is it? I guess that's what the courts have said recently. So no one responsible for ordering torture, or actually torturing someone is going to answer for it.

And Dr Tiller's family is not planning to reopen his clinic. Sad.
I guess in this case, the terrorists win.

Meanwhile the murderer of Dr Tiller has proclaimed that there are many more acts of domestic terrorism planned, but he wouldn't give specifics.

So I must ask: why aren't we waterboarding this sick fuck?
If it's legal and therefore morally correct, what's the problem?

Obviously, I do not support torture. But so many people are screaming about how torture is justified with terrorists and even that to NOT torture them makes one a "terrorist sympathizer." Does this only apply to brown terrorists? Only to foreigners? I honeslty don't get it. This guy is a murderer and intent on using fear and violence to get his way. Ergo, he's a terrorist. Last I heard, we had a War on Terror in this country. So, if you're okay with torture, what's the problem with torturing this fucker to keep more doctors from being murdered?

Word!

I agree with you, but then we'll get nut-jobs asking why we don't legally torture doctors who perform abortions. ug. I know some real pro-lifers. I mean: no matter what, there is no excuse (to them) for having an abortion. Three doctors tell you you'll die if you carry the kid full term? Too bad, no abortion. Doctor says the child will be born without a brain and die soon after birth? Too bad, no abortion. 9-yaer-old girl with Down's Syndrome gets raped by her daddy? Too bad, no abortion. Not even those nut-jobs feel it's right for an abortion doctor to be murdered due to what he does. But yeah, while you don't actually s upport torture (neither do I!), it is a good question.

Frankly, I've *always* been more scared of domestic terrorism than any other sort.

Speaking of religious extremism, I saw a documentary on Jack Chick last night and thought of you.

(Posting from the Megabus! WiFi on *buses,* now.)

But see, those people are insane.

I do so enjoy Jack Chick, much in the way I enjoy the work of Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church.

We get crazy ass faxes from Westboro. You want me to save some for ya?

Torture is notoriously unreliable, even if it is tempting as it is in the case of the man who shot and killed Dr. Tiller.

I am not in favor of it either.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think so. I'm trying to become infuriated less often.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm certainly not in favor of it.

I just find it incredibly ironic that the people who scream loudest about how it's okay to torture suspected terrorists are not saying a goddamn thing about this guy. I guess it's not "terror" if you agree with their aims...

[identity profile] maxverbosity.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
" I guess it's not "terror" if you agree with their aims..."

You know, that's the problem, and I did notice a frightening number of people taking Tiller's death casually....but if someone is suspected of attacking the country....look out.

It is not right. It's sick thinking really - this is a "yes or no" issue on a lot of levels.

I was about 16 and in high school the first time I recall a doctor being murdered for that reason.

I was working at McDonalds and recall that some of the old ladies who worked there made some comments about how the doctor "deserved what he got." I pointed out that they might not feel that way if a bunch of militant, radical vegetarians came in and shot up our McDonalds because we support the murder and consumption of millions of cows.

Their response? "That's totally different."
To this day, I don't see how.

[identity profile] maxverbosity.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's sad, for it is just the same, not different at all. Terrorism is terrorism is terrorism, no matter the issue or perpetrator.

Excellent point.

Sadly, the people who most need to hear this message are unlikely to read it.

HuffPo's channeling you.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! How funny.

Of course, they printed the murderers name, which I intentionally neglected to do. I am reminded of John Lennon's murderer, who wanted only to be famous. I tend not to use his name either, lest he think he achieved his goal. ;-]

I haven't been using his name either, for the same reason.

Water boarding is legal for more than just brown foreigners. I think the catch is that they have to be held without charge, due process, without legal representation and the like.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2009-06-11 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh...right.

So this guy isn't eligible for waterboarding because we've treated him far too fairly?
Sounds about right. :-/
