So I got this Email...

Ms. Friday,

Thank you for your interest in BlahBlah.net Publishing. I believe that “A Stabbing for Sadie” would be a wonderful addition to our growing catalog. Please take a moment to review our Standard Publishing Agreement at BlahBlah.net/pubagreement.html. Once a copy is “signed”, I will assign your work to an editor and add it to our production schedule. Additionally, please take a moment to register for our forums at BlahBlah.net/forums. It is a great way to get to know your fellow authors, along with the readers of our titles. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in the forums, or email me here. I look forward to receiving the full manuscript.

It is a very small house with a diverse catalog. They do both print and down loadable novels and will be paying based on what I sell, there's no advance. I find it a bit suspicious that they've only read the first five chaps and a synopsis and chapter summary. Is that odd? Or is it average for houses of this size who do E-publishing?

Check me, I'm getting less crazy, less drug addicted, I'm getting married, now I'm getting published.
That is some kinda crazy right there.

'I find it a bit suspicious that they've only read the first five chaps and a synopsis and chapter summary.

Maybe they only go through the whole thing with the editor? Also congrats, I think.

Yeah, it sounds like pretty good news.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Could be, I know very little about the process.

Thanks, I think. ;-]

'Could be, I know very little about the process.'

I know even less, maybe it's a complicated plot to steal your soul! Better read that agreement carefully before you "sign" it.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've asked a lawyer friend to skim it for me.

[identity profile] leemoyer.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Rock!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed.

[identity profile] diachrony.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
This could be good. I know someone who had several novels available downloadable only before she got her first print publishing.

Congratulations and let us know what your lawyer friend thinks!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like a good sign. I've been turned down by some E-publishers already, so I should be happy that one is interested.

Thanks!

[identity profile] spiralwitch.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*yay*!!
i've been waiting to read that in your journal!!

sold

[identity profile] katharinakatt.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I sold my first after they read only the first chapter. I'm not sure the reasoning behind it but maybe if they feel it 'grabs the reader' it will sell even if the rest sucks.

Your's even grabbed me! It is long over due to be published in my opinion.

Let us know when it goes to print and I'd like a copy.

HUGS!

Fantastic news! Congratulations, Wednesday, you've earned them.

CONGRATS!! The single most important thing to keep in mind is this: Money flows TO the writer. If they ask you for ANY money for ANYTHING, run far and fast, because that ain't how it works in publishing. :) You might also check out the Preditors and Editors section of the SFWA site (sorry, I'm too lazy to look it up)--it's a good clearinghouse for publishers as far as who people have had bad experiences with.

That said, congrats again!!!

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
good news! i agree you should be careful, but the lawyer look-see + noting the above advice (money flows to the writer) from my (nonresponsive, to me) namesake oughta take care of the not getting ripped-off thing. i figure there's no way it's fundamentally bad news. even if somebody's trying to rip you off for the value of your writing somehow, they've picked your writing as valuable enough to try to steal! and that doesn't seem to be the case here, particularly.

Congratulations!

Like Roane said, check them out before you sign anything. And look through their catalog of stuff to see if you like the quality of the stuff they've put out.

Also, check out http://www.speculations.com/ to see if anyone has anything good or bad to say about your publisher in the Rumor Mill. Your best resource for info on the publisher is going to be other writers!

[identity profile] roane.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
*puzzled* I'm nonresponsive?

[identity profile] fflo.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
:] yeah--- i wrote to you a good while back, cuz i have the same name as you (middle initial too)... never heard back from you. think i actually commented in your blog, now that i try to recall. wednes had thought i was you when she found out my name, and that sent me looking for a local namesake.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
YOU've been waiting?

LOL Thanks, man.

Re: sold

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good to know. I think I was expecting them to ask for the manuscript next, but I guess it wasn't neccesary.

I'll certainly be hyping it like crazy when the time comes. ;-]

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The Snoopy dance? For me?

That's too cool.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I'll be sure to do that before I sign anything. I did a bit of background research, and they seem small but honest.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's a million reasons to feel nervous about this, and a hundred reasons to feel good.

I'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds...

Thanks, baby.

I haven't sent your hat yet, but it will surely be waiting for you when you get back.

Indeed!

[identity profile] maxverbosity.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Some houses read even less than that. In my experience, even the editor sometimes is foggy on details. I've dealt with places that would only accept sample chapters too, and did not want the whole manuscript.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I assumed they'd want to read it all, then there'd be a long review process or something. This just seems a bit too easy. I only wrote this novel in 2004/5. I'm never this lucky.

[identity profile] peteralway.livejournal.com 2007-01-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations!

It certainly sounds like it will kick ass. I'm trying not to get too excited.

Good good. ;)

[identity profile] kissdbyagnome.livejournal.com 2007-01-14 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
YAYA YOU! I dunno if it sounds funny or not that they only read 5 chapters, but it does sound kick ass that they are interested:)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2007-01-14 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Turns out, it's very common for houses to accept or reject manuscripts based on a few chaps and a synopsis. The publisher guy is really nice and seems communicative and on the ball. They are just a REALLY small house.
