Things that make you say "Fie!"

My sweet new toaster no longer works. I actually consulted the directions to make sure I hadn't committed some kind of inadvertent toaster faux pas. This is probably the work of cylons who'd like nothing more than for me to have to eat raw toast with my egg whites and turkey bacon. Bastards. So we now have to take it back and exchange it for a toaster that actually toasts. Shame, since I liked the blue lights on it. I've never had bad luck with an Oster before.

Fie!

Received my package from elf today. Apparently they couldn't send me the nail stuff because they ran out. With a big "everything is one dollar" sale that's bound to happen. I did get 2 4-packs of shadow, 2 eye liners, 2 multi purpose pinks, a brush, 2 pressed powders (although these were quite tiny, .16oz to be exact. Most of my other PP's are from .35-.4oz. Still, for a dollar it's hard to complain. Got some other stuff too, makup remover pads, lip balm, concealer, sharperners and such...all for only $18. 'Twas a fabulous bargain and the stuff all looks pretty and nice.

Only a slight Fie! over no nail stuff--I ordered 3 polishes and a set of toe separators because I'm a girly, girly, girl.

Smallville: it's painfully bad.
Fie!

Missing birthday parties: also Fie!

I'm in the middle of a smallish block as I try to finish chapter four of my NaNo Novel. This chapter will have a smallish animal attack too, so that'll be fun. As usual, I'm posting chaps in my awesome writing journal, [livejournal.com profile] wednes_writes. And also as usual, I need to know who is reading so you have to join up proper to see my amazing locked chapters. Woot!

And from our "I don't think this is just me..." file, here's a poll:

Depends on the situation. R&I finish each other's sentences all the time. Old friends who've know each other well, and know each other's stories, it's all part of the camaraderie for me, stepping on each other's sentences and such. But, no, I would never do it to or like having it done by people I didn't feel close to.

Hi there!

I don't think it ever occurred to me that finishing another person's sentences might be rude. When I feel closely attuned to someone, like my wifey, I naturally finish her sentences. I always think it's kind of cool when she finishes my own sentences, because it always feels like a cool little psychic moment.

As for people that I'm NOT closely connected to, finishing someone else's sentences always seems like it was scripted out of a mystery novel:

"Since we know that the killer wore size 11 shoes, then ..."
" ... it must have been Old Man McGuillicutty!"

But now that you mention it, I can see how it may be perceived as: "you're not talking fast enough", or "I have no patience for you". It's really never occurred to me! :(

Crap. LJ hasn't done that to me in a LONG time. Ate my comment.

Summed up:
Doesn't bother me if it's a close friend or my hubby, if they are 1) accurate about what I was going to say and 2) say it as a normal extension of my speech cadence. That's fine, even kinda cool. Just says to me that we're on the same wavelength, and I no longer have to beat that particular horse. I actually really, really enjoy it when a group of us get together and basically no one gets to finish their own sentences, because we're all so on the same subject. :)

If it's a complete stranger and they manage to finish my sentence accurately and just as a normal flow of speech, it's startling but totally fine. Generally signals someone that I'm going to get along with really well, actually.

I personally try not to finish other peoples' sentences, but I've been taught to actually listen and not be thinking about what I'm going to reply, or try to guess where they're going with it. I don't always succeed, of course; with my husband and groups of close friends I do it probably as often as the rest of them. Where I try really hard is with strangers and acquaintances, though.

The one time it truly irks me is when it's an acquaintance, and they literally *run over* my sentence without having the *slightest* clue where I was actually going, so that as I continue to talk they actually have to change what's coming out of their mouth to try and fit where I was going, and what THEY say ends up coming out a garbled non-sentence of almost-echoed words. COMPLETELY irritating. It's like they want to prove they know what I'm thinking, and they're just SO not right. I know two people who do this habitually, and I almost can't stand to talk to either of them. For one, I know they're not actually listening to what I'm saying, and for two, I can tell they don't think at *all* like I do. Plus, just kinda irritating speech habit.

In general, it only bothers me when it's the above case, or when I'm trying to get a point across and my sentence is hijacked and finished so the other person can steal the topic/spotlight/track.

What the three previous commenters said. Sometimes it's a way of expressing enthusiasm and interest and closeness. Don't really have experience of other kind of finishing each other's sentences.

my elf stuff took forever to get, too..but for it being such a good deal..I cant complain too much!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-11-05 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There are certain people who do this that it just grates on m y nerves...of course they tend to do it during an argument.

But you're right, it depends largely on the situation.

That's why I post polls usually, to see if what I'm feeling is "just me" or if there's another angle that I'm missing.

So, thanks!

Thank you!

I'm really trying to figure out why I'm so irritated by this particular quirk--you know, without making it take up a whole therapy session ;-]

But that seems to be it:
1. I don't think they're listening.
2. They're waiting (impatiently) for me to stop talking so they can talk/tell me why I'm wrong.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-11-05 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucky You!

Yep, I agree.

Did your Thing arrive yet?
We sent it on Thurs by FedEx so it should be there soon!

No thing yet, but I am very excited!

My husband is an interrupter, and it drives me crazy. He seems to think that he can finish my sentences for me, but he usually does not know what I'm going to say. He also tends to ask a question, than ask a follow-up questionwhile I'm still answering the first question. Or ask Jeff a question and then answer it himself, before Jeff (who is 7) has time to formulate his answer.

Some folks seem to like that they and their spouses can finish each other's sentences/thoughts because it feels like they're so in-sync. B and I are comfortable with one another, but in-sync is rare for us.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think because I'm so impatient I'm extra reactive to impatience in others. H and I are in sync with humor, but rarely on the serious stuff. ;-/

[identity profile] princezna.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I like it when people finish my sentences if they finish them accurately in a psychic way. It makes me feel more connected with them. If they finish it incorrectly I just correct them and keep on flapping my gums. No biggie.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? That's cool.

I tend to get really annoyed and I'm not exactly sure why.
Of course this person is always trying to guess what I'm saying and he's usually oversimplifying or downright wrong.
