So...

H and I are seriously contemplating a move out of state. Someplace with a low cost of living, good public transportation, and some hope of me getting a job.

It is becoming increasingly clear that I will not come out as the best candidate for any job in this town. I do not have what is commonly considered to be a "professional appearance," I don't drive, I have bad credit and a brief but irritating criminal hoo-ha, and a job record about on par wiht other bipolars I know (which is to say, erratic).

So tell me kids, where should we move to?

'Someplace with a low cost of living, good public transportation, and some hope of me getting a job.'

Sydney! Actually I'm not sure how low the cost of living in here.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure we can go quite that far. ;-)

Maybe just for a visit?

[identity profile] everythingtold.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking the job market in OH really sux too, especially in Allen County. Cost of living is a bit cheaper but the sad thing is, where you'll get paid well - cost of living is higher :-(

I'm too tired to think now but is it possible to get your record expunged if it's been at least five years? Just wondering.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no clue about the expunging. That would be nice. I'm also gonna talk to my job chick about subsitute teaching. It's probably about time I look into doing that if there are enough schools on the bus line.

[identity profile] sudrin.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in addition to living there myself, TN Is very nice because it lacks a state income tax. This has enabled me to make a nice single living for myself. The general cost of living is lower too for most things.

[identity profile] sudrin.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, the public transportation isn't really that hot now that I think about it. It exists, but its not like a Chicago, or an Ann Arbor.

Well, my area doesn't have good public transportation and jobs are scarce, so I can't recommend the wilds of western Mass. or southern VT. *pout*

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
H is concerned about The South due to race relations.
And I am concerned because of Bible Beltery...

But then, I don't really get down there much, so I have no real idea what it's like except hot and buggy.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ann Arbor is only good public transport conpared to other Michigan cities. Nationwide, it's a joke.

[identity profile] sudrin.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess those are other factors I can't take into account. I have at least one friend who I know who can be quite racist. (THough never to anyones face for what thats worth). Nashville doesn't seem too bad but I imagine there might be "Hidden" issues that I wouldn't encounter on a regular basis.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I almost lived in Boston after graduation, to be a nanny for this family of Jewish doctors. Didn't work out...as you might imagine. And the driving there was fucking crazy.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you White Devil!!

;-}

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd imagine that the race issue would only be a problem in small towns in the south. I mean there are race issues in the big towns too, but the same things happen here. However, I imagine that any community worthwhile, anywhere in the county, would be ok.

As much as I made fun of the south for all the years I was there, you can't forget that our interpretation of it here is like people in the south thinking Michigan is like Alaska, when it comes to temp. Everything is stereotypical, on many levels.

[identity profile] rivetkitten.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we in Northeast PA have a bunch of temp agencies that seem to have plenty of jobs. And one of the girls I was working with at my current job had lost jobs because she was in jail for a 3-day stretch and didn't show up to work, but continues to be able to get jobs. She's also not the most svelte person on the planet.

Cost of living here is pretty low, because it *is* a fairly depressed area, and I'm not sure how the public transit is once you get down into the cities. Race relations are really only difficult between the whites & the hispanics (Hazelton, for example), so you shouldn't have issues with that. You could look at careerbuilder.com for ideas of what's available around here. The zip code to search around is 18702.

Good luck!

[identity profile] uterdic.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not true. Ann Arbor for a city of it's size is quite good compared to any town in the country. It's got the best public transportation system in any town I've lived in, except Washington, DC, and that's cities of over a million people to towns of 7,000. Granted, I've not lived in a lot of places, but Ann Arbor is not nearly as bad as you may think, or would discover after leaving the area.

P.S. I'd be sad if you left.

I thought Boston had good public transportation? (I don't get there very often, so I don't know (it's a 3 hr drive from here). The cost of living there is pretty high, though.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Move to Alaska. It's nice and cold. I don't know anything else about it.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
True. I do notice though, that Anne is having problems in her area with being gay, and she's in OHIO.

I don't really know how to get a feel for what goes on other places since H and I don't have traveling funds. I certainly don't want to move to a beautiful place with low rent near a good job only to find out H and I can't leave the house together.

Alaska? That's funny.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey thanks.

I was actually thinking about PA since H's family is there and will likely be moving to another city when their court case with Philly PD is resolved. So I will certainly look into jobs in that area. H can transfer to pretty much anywhere as he workd for Fed Ex/Kinko's.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it hard to beleive that a city without a subway, an el, or indeed, benches to sit on in poor neighborhoods competes well with other cities of it's size and prestige.

Good transportation to me means that you don't have to turn down a TON of jobs because you can't get to them on the busses. In Philly, for example, you can get anywhere, it just may take more time.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL Boston did have good public transport.

That job didn't work out because they were snobby rich doctor types (not my preferred type; and indeed it was mutual) and they expected me to drive. Not an unreasonable expectation, but not one I can meet at any rate.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Moose.

They have Moose there...and presumably squirrels.
I actually know a chick there, she loves it.

[identity profile] everythingtold.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah! Subbing wouldn't be a bad thing! Do you have to have a certificate in teaching or something to sub? I don't know. Just checking but it shouldn't be that hard for you to check that out/get a certificate/renew it. There's GOT to be some way for you to go to grad school and finish that up.

Definitely look into getting your record expunged. :-)

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2006-07-17 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even apply to grad schools until I either declare bankruptsy or get out of debt in the normal, bill-paying way.

I am told that I can sub teach with a four year degree. I don't really want to, but I will if the opportunity comes up. I'm going to discuss all this with my new job developer, as soon as she calls me.

Oh, I get it. Duh.

Hmm, Wednesday as a nanny. Interesting picture. (I'm just imagining the bedtime stories.) ; )
