The magick numbers you have to look at are often 15, 20, 25, 30... These are known as pop retro triggers. This is they type of thing that creates 80s retro music kicking in around 95 and hitting it's widespread peak in 2000. This is why there was a Brady Bunch Movie.
Despite the absolute lack of quality of these films, there was a simple equation that they brought in cash. A scary amount of cash. It's why some of them went back for 3-4 of them. I have one friend that commented about Ben Kingsly in "Sound of Thunder": "Well, Guess Ben needed to refinish a wing of his house."
I know we all want to look to actors as having integrity and the film and tv industry as having pearls of substance. But at the end of the day to many actors, it's a job. A rare one at that. So, if it's a paycheck... Some of them will take it.
Now, personally, I feel badly that Guttenberg felt the need to go back. He's got a good thing running now on Veronica Mars and is doing a fairly good job to reinvent himself. Granted, respected actor Leslie Neilsen went the opposite way to reinvent himself and dove into these bumbling comedies in the later portion of his.
So, it was bound to happen. Hopefully this important life lesson will prepare all of us for the inevitable 2015 release of American Pie: High School Reunion. Which will be even more work for Allyson after the string of 2010 shows like: E! True Hollywood story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy Battle of the Slayers (reality Gameshow), and A very Buffy Slaying.
Now... Does this formula always work? Why does it work? Well.... the first question is easily answered. No. But to explain I need to go into the second half. The system. The reason people like the equation is because it gives the target audience something that feels like it's "For them" Find your common age when people were into tv, music, film... then, find the target age where they are nostalgic or better.. pining for what they remember. It's hitting many of my peers hard on the TV and film level because reality shows just aren't cutting it. In my age group I remember "The Hulk" really well. (1978->2003 == 25 yrs). The movie companies know this. So, they look at target release dates, then they go back thru the catalogue and say.... Ooh! How about this?
So here's your homework/a game to try. We all know about what's coming in 2006 by now. But what about 2007? We may not know... but the studios do. go to IMDB and select 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 off of 2007. The TV to film sweet spot is often 25, so 1980. For example. My #1 pick for major film of 2008 is: "The Greatest American Hero" Find one, cast it if you want. I'd be curious what people come up with.
Maybe it'll be all hilarious flashbacks of the cast walking off the job after hurricane katrina. Th only thing left standing will be the Blue Oyster Bar.
Re: Actually , it unfortunately makes lots of sense
I'm not even opposed to remakes as a concept. Some of them are quite womderful. But doing a remake of a film (or god forbid, a franchise) that wasn't very good in the first place just seems like a waste of good film equipment. At the same time, so many people think it's some kind of sacrelege to remake good movies.
I do realize that such dreck exists because there is a market for it. That being the case, the public is more to blame for the festering pile of crap that is hollywood cinema, than greedy producers or even the actors. When I was doing my undergrad (double major, one of which was theatre) we were told that theatre people are among the only people who would rather work for free than not work. I suppose that's true of plenty of actors, if there's work they take it.
Indeed, if I was offered a chance to be in some dumbass FOX comedy or a crappy teen movie, I might very well do it just for fun and a paycheck. But then, I've been outta work for a while ;-).
Steve Gutenberg could have been a wonderful serious actor and has even done some good comedy. Who knows what could have led him to such a pass.
I suspect that Love Boat and Fantasy Island will get movies; so might Dallas or Dynasty. I'm amazed Mork and Mindy hasn't been mentioned anywhere; and I agree that GAH is a safe bet for a remake/reimagining.
Well, it's low-brow stuff, perhaps one of the few low-brow things I've found to be funny for more than a single movie, but sometimes, that sort of escapist humor works with my mood....
Of course I meant non horror franchise. I mean what is better than freddie V. jason? I mean really what is better. I never saw it.
But honestly when I was in elementary school I really did like the poice acedemy movies. Of course the ploy to get people to be nostalgic about this will fail simpley because none of the previous movies were box office smashes.
For a split second, the thought crossed my mind that the number 2006 might refer to the number of the sequel and that the last 2000 or so films in the series had passed by me blissfully unawares.
I was just saying last night at a gathering that I thought Police Academy was pretty funny when I snuck in to see it as a little kid. But then, every vulgar joke was hilarious because I was just a kid.
I can't beleive you just said "MILF". And yeah, wasn't Kim Catrall like, the main chick in the movie?
Of course you're a computer guy, which I guess would make YOU a CGILF; which doesn't really spell anything you can pronounce. I assume that's why no one ever brings it up.

Jon Stewart of the Daily Show told a joke two weeks ago that they should make another police academy and set it in iraq.
His point was that our attempts to train the native military were as successfull as the training in the police academy movies.
I wonder if someone took him seriously.

In all seriousness, I almost walked out of the original NoES. I thought it sucked really, really bad.

And that someone is Steve Guttenberg.
I guess Boys from Brazil II is having a hard time getting greenlighted.
I'm just playin the music for you...

The third and fourth had their moments.....
Beyond that,.....well, it wore thin.

I think it's fantastic that they've got George Gaynes back as Commandante Lassard. The guy is 88 years old!
