Holiday Rhetoric: One Woman's View
There is an interesting paradox at the mall...each store wants to convince you to spend, spend, spend in the name of the season. At the same time, everyone wants to not offend anyone of any particular religious leaning. So there is no mention of Jesus, Christmas, Hannukah, or whatever. Some stores go the opposite way by trying to mention every religious holiday associated with the season, and always manage to miss someone who has to take the time to complain about it.
Myself, I have decided to dispense with all the carefully syntaxed wierdness asociated with those words. There is a day, on the 25th of December where many people have the day off. Lots of businesses are closed, and some people get together with thier families. There is also extra eating and gift giving. This day is called Christmas. You dont' have to go to mass or love Jesus or send anyone a gift or card to enjoy it. And you don't have to explain your private beliefs to strangers because of how you choose to greet them.
If someone says Merry Christmas to me, I don't feel a need to go out of my way to explain that I don't like Jesus, or that "Santa" should be jailed for breaking and entering. No one needs to tell me that my work should be open regular hours on the 25th because they don't celebrate Christmas and we shouldn't "make them" by being closed. Of all the stupid crap!
Isn't it possible that we could all just do our own thing and still be respectful of everyones right to do likewise? Dammit!
