Good Christ Almighty (whoever THAT is) !
Have you seen this movie, SAW?
I happened to finally watch it last night, as the lovely
klynnfrost and the elusive
slapnticklejr were over. After a yummy dinner from Qdoba (mmmmm...qdoba...)we settled in to watch this film. Man...it was fucking horrifying. Tight script, mucho suspence and an almost italian level of gore. Disturbing to the max, and damn impressive for a contemporary american horror film. And the ending...clevertrousers that I fancy myself, I did not see that coming by a longshot.
I also notice this makeup thing that's going on now, where they've finally figured out how to make your face look like the blood has drained out of it, like when you bleed out or whatever. I first noticed it in some horrible TV movie about shark attacks, it was the only good thing in the movie. I saw it again, funnily enough in open water (but to a lesser extent) and now in SAW.
Excellent use of Michael Emerson as the red herring. I thought it was him the first time I saw him, mainly because of his creepy and excellent run as William Hinks, one of the recurring psychopaths on The Practice. He was just a tad bit creepier than Michael Monks as Geroge Vogleman. Anyway, he was awesome in this movie! Cary Elwes is a fine actor, I don't know why he doesn't get offered more good roles, but he can do horror till the cows come home so far as i'm concerned. I also thought that was a nice departure for Danny Glover, the kind of over-the-top obsessed crazy ex-cop guy.
Anyway, I like this darker wave of horror that is resurging these days. I mean, the idea that someone has to survive is a relataively recent, and if I may say arbitrary, horror convention. It's much scarier when you get something like Last House on the Left, where you just don't know what the fuck is gonna happen. SAW has an excelent tone throughout although I would have liked to have a tad more character development. I'd like to think Adam deserved what he got in some twisted way, but I saw no evidence of that.
So yeah, if you like horror and have a strong stomach (pun intended) do check out SAW.
