Packzi Day!
Can't talk, eating!
And while I'm on the subject, if this isn't the stupidest thing I've ever read, I'll eat my hat (right after I finish this Packzi)! Obese people are often in self-denial that they actually have a weight problem. Further, they are in denial that their obesity is actually affecting their health or sense of well-being. You must remember: obese people often function and feel most comfortable within a circle of overweight friends. They develop, as a result, a distorted body image. Also, denial is a strong protective mechanism for the conscious mind. Obese patients learn to shop at clothing stores that carry "plus" sizes. Likewise, they learn to shop alone or with obese friends so that they are not exposed to the anxiety of buying in the larger sizes while friends shop in the "normal" section.
Yes, most women have no idea that they are fat. That's why pretty much no woman on earth walks around lamenting that she is not as skinny as a model. And the very idea that a store would sell clothing to fat people? Madness! If fat people want clothes so bad, they should just lose 80 pounds before work tomorrow... What?
And don't get me started on the "normal" section. You know, because apparently I shop in the "Abby Normal" section. Right, because if I go shopping with a fat person, it's because I have a distorted body image, not because my skinny friends and I can't shop in the same stores. And of course it's all those fat people going around giving other fat people distorted body image; and not sickly thin women giving everyone else distorted body image. < / sarcasm >
Not to mention, when you go to a store, men are "husky" while women are "plus size". Husky sounds manly, like Stud. While "plus size" just sounds bigger.
People are dumb.

Most people probably feel better shopping with people who are closer to their size. I don't think obese people are perpetuating a bad self-image or are in denial or anything. If they were in denial they'd shop in the petite section. If I were in denial that I'm 5'2" I'd buy extra-long pants or something. I dunno.
Um... if obese women (and why is that thing aimed at women for Pete's sake?) hang around with women the similar size it's not to perpetuate a bad self image. If it is, then that means most of my friends smoke because I'm in denial that it's bad for me. Yep, that's exactly it, I'm in denial. Well... that's a bad analogy because smoking's a choice and has nothing to do with genetics or all the stuff I spouted out a few entries ago. (Was I rude in that entry?) No... people hang out with who they hang out with because they get along with them. Sometimes they happen to have a similar build/general appearance but that's not always the case. Most of my friends in HS were band geeks, computer geeks, drama freaks, stoners, science geeks... OK, everyone but 'jocks' and 'preps'. Happy to say most of the latter two turned otu to grow up into nice people I can talk to.
As for shopping with peopole closer to my size? Sure, it's a little more convienent (provided we wear similar style) but I don't have a problem with going into a 'plus-sized' store. I've gotten some snooty looks for no good reason but that's happened in American Eagle when I was shopping with my sister. Also, I'd have to agree that I don't like the term 'plus sized'. I don't know what a better term would be... voluptuous or curvy or something? I don't know. Honest.
Society shouldn't be so hard on women to be so thin, that really is what adds to a poor body image.

This I agree with. I see this all the time both online and in real life. Obesity is just an evil myth spread by evil health professionals that just want money, it's allll a scam. Big is beautiful and blah de blah de blah.
One thing I really hate is when people bash models and accuse them of causing eating disorders. Like Kate Moss was personally responsible for someone's bulimia or something. Like it was her idea that the current beauty standard is what it is. And I hate that people call sickly looking just because they're skinny. Like skinny = sickly. Some 45 y/o Finnish lady might be close to death in the weight of said celeb, but it doesn't mean the celeb isn't well. People are different.
Exactimundo.
They'll be sorry when all us fat-folk are...

I disagree with your second point however. Being too thin is just as unhealthy. And it does influence young girls when the only women considered sexy are those who are absurdly thin.

I wish I could read more of the actual The Obesity Sourcebook. It seems to be chalked full of random sources of hilarity. "Material in this book has been collected from a wide range of government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and periodicals." Those are all the sources of dilusion and humor.

I must disagree witht he assertion that there are lots of women out there who don't know that thier health is affected by thier weight. Perhaps I just haven't met anyone with this kind of denial; but in my experience, even slightly overwieght women are very down about being too heavy.

Also, how dare we fat people shop in the "Plus" sized dept!! I guess we should all be in Juniors trying to squeeze our bountiful butts and tremendous tits into size 4's. Imagine my disbelief when I read that chunky people shop in the stores that carry the clothes that actually FIT us. ABSURD!! Oh! The OUTRAGE!

The point is that being overweight effects nearly every aspect of a person's health. There are people who refuse to see that.
You are right. Smoking is another issue that effects a person's general health. Many smokers don't believe that smoking effects anything else besides their lungs, and heart.
IMHO
The reason there are people asserting that being overweight is healthy is an extreme reaction to the prevalence of the underweight weight look being portrayed as normal. The fact of the matter is that neither are healthy behavior patterns.

It is very much a reaction to the dangerous diet fads, pills and even surgery that people undergo because they dont' want to be fat, and don't want to change thier lifestyle. The bottom line here is that between surgery and beign fat, it is safer for most people to carry around the extra weight. Or if you do want to lose wieght, you must change whatever lifestyle aspects gave you the excess weight, and if you aren't willing to do that, it's less risky to stay fat than to yo-yo up and down or starve yourself "thin". Just as fat does not always equal unhealthy, thin certainly does not always equal healthy.

Being underweight can certainly be unhealthy, but it's very difficult to know if someone's just skinny or skinny enough for it to be unhealthy. Some people are like whippets (a rather horrible example but hey), they look alarmingly skinny but it's just the way they are built. Some people are naturally on the heavy side as well, even if they eat right and are fit. It's dangerous to judge by looks alone, and stupid too. I don't understand why we have to make these assumptions about other people anyway.

You don't read the feminist communties on LJ at all, do you? You've missed out on the fat-positive thing completely? It's kinda like pro-ana. Fat women post pictures of thenselves and other fat women and get validation how attractive fatness is. It goes so far that when someone decides to try and lose weight for health reasons, others get angry at them and say they're betraying the movement and caving in to the pressure to be skinny. They really do claim that obesity is not unhealthy and all the scientific evidence to the contrary is an evil ploy, a conspiracy "against women". There's this book that they hold as a bibble of sorts, I can't remember its name but it should be easy to Google up.

Some people say that being overweight isn't unhealthy.
All other things being equal, an overweight person is less healthy.

But yeah, I find it difficult to align myself with feminism not only because treating women as people should be a no-brainer...but also because I'm leary about being mistaken for that type of radical feminazi.
