No, seriously...what happened?

Happy Birthday [profile] uterdic and [profile] lickingtoad, I love you both more than I'd feel comfortable posting

Until yesterday, I took pride in the fact that I lived in a liberal state. Now I realize we are no better than fucking Ohio (no offense to [profile] derekfz of course) but how can any rational thinking person honestly think it's okay to tell two consenting adults who love eachother that they can't get married? Do you really think it's okay to tell everyone they have to beleive what bigoted Christians beleive? Frankly, I'm more pissed about this than I am about Bush. It's one thing to do something stupid because you're frightened; but this whole voting your bigotry thing makes me physically ill. Of course now, being physically ill in Michigan is a good thing, because I can just ask my doc to write me a scrip for "da chronic". and since I can't enjoy any of H's benfits, all you fucking homophobes out there can pay for it out of your tax dollars.

You know, I almost hope you Christ lovers are right. We the people are going to need divine intervention to survive another four years of this fucking regime...
...oh, did I say "we the people"? I meant, our civil rights. (Of course i don't think all Christians are bigots, but I have only heard faith-based arguments against gay marriage. Marriage is a legal arrangement, while matrimony is the one that is sacred and holy. As a pagan, I beleive I must treat people as they would want to be treated, and since i'd prefer not to be told that I'm immoral for loving my significant other, I don't do that to others. Too bad you Christians don't have a similar teaching...oh wait...)

And BTW, Canada is not going to accept a huge influx of pissed off Americans. So my fellow disgruntled freinds can put that shit right out of your heads.

Anyway...back to the NaNo.

I think the sadder thing for me is that the Bible and Christ don't really preach these values in my opinion. Its only MAN who puts these things into play.

See my edit!

[identity profile] reinventedmuse.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
i heart you!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

Alas, we may not legally form a civil union...

[identity profile] haroeris-astrum.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Bush and this issue is not separate. Bush endorses the Xtian notion of marriage, i.e., the union between one male and one female adult. I am sure that I raised this before but cannot remember where.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
True, but they were voted on separately in my state. Actually, Kerry did not support gay marraiage either. But he respected the fact that reasonable people can disagree, whereas Bush makes you sign a paper saying you won't disagree before you can be in the same room as him.

[identity profile] haroeris-astrum.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
That is because he is sanctimonious and ideologically imperialist (not to mention other forms of imperialist that he shall continue to take a fancy to). Hmmm... One man, one woman ... One man, one gun ... I bet he would disapprove of the latter.

but in our hearts will shall overcome!
*but don't try to come visit me in the hospital when i am sick..*

aww but I want to move to Canada

[identity profile] anarchys-savior.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Bush winning didn't surprise me too much. I knew it would happen. What's depressing is said ban on civil rights(not "special rights," just basic ones. Douche bags) and the fact that the Senate is now even more Republican than it was before. We're screwed.

I live with my mom who is a typical Christian bigot. She actually bought a sign to put up in her yard telling people to vote to 'protect traditional marraige.' No wonder I'm depressed all the time. XD

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't you tell your mom from me that if she really wants to "protect traditional marriage" she should campaign to pass laws against adultery, alcohol, and internet porn. Those three things are more harmful to marriage than all the gays in the world put together.

Idiot.

My mother and her husband are bigots too. But you really can rise above if you try.

[identity profile] derekfz.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
hey, ohio can suck it. whatever distressing bullshit happens to the state until the next time we have the chance to vote in a statewide or nationwide election, they fucking asked for it and more than deserve it. i guess i was involved in the delusion that my home state *didn't* have it's head up it's ass for the most part. there goes that. good jorb, buckeye state, you fat fucking hunk of shit.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I have been sitting here all day being all depressed as hell. I can accept the fact that Bush was elected. I am having a harder time accepting the proposal. It just disappoints me that people think two men getting married will weaken marriage, but that repeated divorces are no big deal.

PS. I'm glad you two reconciled.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the point? I can never marry her now!

;-)

[identity profile] hortonhearsawho.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the worst part of the whole thing here in Ohio was that it had extremely little to do with gay marriage. I don't know if it's the same in Michigan, but it is now impossible for straight, unmarried couples to get any benefits. If a child is living with a parent and a step-parent, and the parent dies, the child can receive nothing from the step-parent's company. Of course, these are state jobs, but there are a lot of state jobs.

They labeled it the Gay Marriage Issue, making people believe that if it wasn't passed they'd be allowing gay marriage. They used confusing wording, so people didn't understand and didn't want to work to understand. It was incredibly unpublicized, people didn't know anything other than Gay Marriage Issue. And so all the farmers and backwoodsmen down south went to the polls with one thing in their minds for Issue 1, to ban the Evil Gays from Marriage. And they did it.

What they don't realize is that it does so much more than inform an entire group of people that they are not only unwelcome, but illegal. Not that they care, probably, because anyone who isn't married is living in sin anyway.

And the same people that promoted it complain constantly about how our population is stagnant or lessening. About how no one moves to Ohio, no immigrants, no recent graduates. And now they basically ban people? Kids grow up and they leave, they don't come here. Why would they come here?

And there I rant. Horrible backward hicks.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is the same in Michigan, except that I thought we were too smart to fall for such nonsense.

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted no on that stupid proposal. If two people want to get married, I don't care what their gender is. Next thing you know they'll be trying to make illegal interracial marriages, May-December romances, inter-faith marriages, etc. This made me really mad when I turned on the radio this morning. I can't even begin to imagine how upset it must have my many gay friends and associates. If you want to be married, it is not the government's business!!!

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually they won't.

Gay marraige is already not recognized here, so that proposal only affects civil unions. It was a ploy to disallow benefits for ALL unmarried couples (and to utilize people's prejudices to do it), which means my insurance is in jeopardy because my union with H was not sanctified by Christ, nor did I make H sign a paper saying he'd love me until he died.

[identity profile] hortonhearsawho.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the most surprising things was that the same things did pass in other states. I expected it from here; I mean, it's Ohio.

But Michigan and Oregon? Insane. Horrible.

[identity profile] robdeicide.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
passing laws against adultery and porn are probably around the corner wednes...adultery i think is more of a social problem and porn is not necessarily a bad thing. most likely, things that we dont consider porn, things like art will be banned as well. remember when john ashcroft covered up the genitals on that statue? also canada has officially stated that we will have to wait in line to immigrate like everyone else. what i may be able to do is get into a school their then things may be a little bit different for me as i will kind of be like a resident alien or something...canada however will not accept anyone that has had a drug conviction, even pot, even though it is nearly decriminalized their. also i believe that canada is afraid of polluting their country with the likes of people that would vote for bush and even those who didnt but who cant help but have "typical shitty american values." also about gay marriage, some xians preach tolerance, even my mom who is catholic has come to accept my brother who is gay, but most catholics do not and it seems to me that protestants (who are a majority here) really detest gays the most. see its all about the backwoods redneck vote, those are the people who vote, the gun people, the crazy christian homophobes, and old people who tend to be also crazy, christian, and homophobic, not to mention racist, xenophobic, anti abortion, pro war, and focused on social security (which kerry didnt really address much, but SS will be gone pretty soon anyway so fuck it.)

sorry for this rant im so beyond pissed off today.....

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, dude. And good points, all!

I do know many Christians (H's family, for example) who are kind and accepting. It's just so irritating to hear people use faith based arguements to pass legal prohibitions on things that are secular in nature. It makes no sense, and hurts everyone!

[identity profile] madush69.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the public should have voted that proposal down, AND allowed gay unions. I mean, whose fucking business is any of that shit anyway?? If I want to get married to someone, or if I want to not get married to someone, OR if I want to have a long term girlfriend on my insurance, so what!! It's the individual's business, not society at large.

[identity profile] nate101000.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like she could ever deserve you.

[identity profile] klynnfrost.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
But Wednes, I posted about the Faith Action Network I thought...It's a faith based group that fights for LGBT rights.

[identity profile] wednes.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...you did. And I know that many Christians are level headed and not bigoted. But the people who spoke out against gay marriage gave reasoning that was totally Christian in nature. "It's Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve" and other such blithering nonsense. Even claims that homosexuality is "unnatural" or that people want "special rights" are based on the idea that only the "Christian" viewpoint matters. Sadder still is that even bearing in mind that not all Christians are awful enough to want to pass a legal mandate for bigotry...there were still enough who did for them to win.
