Monster

I made a post earlier which contain Wednes' Very Special Friend of the Week. But sadly, the computer at work ate it somehow (bitch!) and I don't feel like typing it all out again. So you'll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out who this weeks Very Special Friend is.

I just got home after seeing Monster. Unless you live in a cave, you probably already know that this movie stars Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci...two utter babes. You may also know that this film is about the real life case of american female serial killer Aileen Wournos. It was directed by first time feature director Patty Jenkins.

The film is a highly sympathetic portrayal of the killer, really the most sympathetic you can be while still staying true to the evidence. It is also fairly kind to the girlfreind, whom I regard as a total Judas. The film really begs you to take both the feminist position, and to excuse people's actions because of thier troubled pasts. Personally, I think its important that we have sympathy for those who had terrible childhoods. But it's equally important that as adults, we do our best to "get past that shit", as Lee puts it so eloquently in the film.

I think Monster tells you a different side of the story than what you're expecting in many ways. One of the comments i heard about the film before I saw it was that there is a love scene between two glamorous hollywood babes, and it is not arousing at all. Funny, because the men who told me that represent rpecisly the kind of attitude that gets men killed in this film. Ha ha...
I must say i'm a fan of actors who aren't afraid to get down and dirty playing unattracitve people doing things most of the audience doesn't or wouldn't understand. I applaud Jenkins clear statement that you can never know someone's story, even if it tries to mitigate horrible crimes.

Yes, most whoremongering men are probably evil, but we dont' get to go ahead and shoot them...even if we really need a car.

I'll post it tomorrow.

I have seen pictures of the real Aileen and her girlfriend and I can tell you that neither of them are as hot as the actresses playing them. Infact, they are both rather unattractive. And, not all of the men killed by them were soliciting anything. In one case, that of a reverend who was murdered by Aileen, it was thought he was being kind in offering her (a hitchhiker) a ride to town. Aileen thought that ALL men were evil and should be punished.

Aileen had Finnish blood in her veins and as a serial killer fiend I followed her case for years. =) Diamanda Galás has dedicated concerts to her and recorded Phil Och's "Iron Lady" as a tribute to her.

Although I have not seen the movie...If we give someone to much for their "troubled" past they lose sight of overcoming the past and breaking that cycle to become a productive member of society. They get caught in the "I am a victim always" loop.

it left me with this odd feeling, I mean I could never actually kill, but the other night I remember telling my roomie regarding the movie we were watching(one of the Dirty Harry Movies), that if rapists were hunted down and killled by their victimes I think there would be less rape. Then he got this mortified look on his face as he agreed and I thought maybe I should take a class in speech ettiquette.
Then the DVD kept skipping and we never saw they end of it. Then two nights later I saw Monster, it left me with so much to think about. I already commented on it earlier.

I still need to go see Big Fish.

Indeed, I have read the main book about AW, and have seen the A&E stuff as well. The movie does a pretty good job of sticking to the facts. Indeed, if I had to deal with what a hooker deals with, I'd probably hate all men too...I know working phonsex lines almost turned me gay.

Actually, Theron looks like shit in this movie, and she actually look close to the real Wouros. I agree though, that the girlfriend was really ugly.

I followed the story as well, oddly pleased at the idea of a female erial killer who killed much more the way men do.

I concur.
